Description
Our Sensory Integration Assessments and Interventions are delivered by Qualified Occupational Therapists. Sensory processing is the way our brain takes in and organises information from the world around us. Our sensory system is a complicated mix of different parts of our bodies which work together to let us know what we see, feel, hear, smell and taste. This system also lets us know where our body parts are in relation to one another and how fast or slow our bodies are moving in the space around us. Everyone’s experience of the sensory world around them is unique to their body and their brain.
For some people, notably if they are neurodivergent or have experienced childhood trauma, their sensory systems receive and process sensory information differently. This means that they can be easily under or over stimulated by their environments which can have a significant impact on their ability to function and their wellbeing. Occupational Therapist are trained in sensory integration theory which allows us to assess sensory processing and implement sensory integration interventions. Some of these interventions could include developing sensory diets, supporting family and individuals with sensory-psycho education, implementing sensory integration de-sensitisation programmes, and exploring environmental sensory adaptations.
Sensory dysregulation is one of the leading causes of behavioural and emotional break down. It has significant impacts on a young person’s ability to engage with and attend to education, socialisation and family life. Unfortunately, there are very limited services providing sensory integration assessment and intervention, with the majority currently being offered privately at a high cost. Sensory processing is an area we feel very passionately about and have seen first hand the profoundly positive impact basic assessment and intervention can have on individuals and their family’s ability to thrive.
